Melania and the Jacket

Yes, it’s true. Melania Trump wore a jacket featuring the words “I really don’t care. Do u?” while en route to visit child detainment centers in McAllen, Texas. I didn’t believe it at first glance either. Literally, my first thought upon seeing the image while scrolling my Twitter feed was is this for real?! After all, in the digital age, editing photos to add words or distort images is easily enough done.

But alas, it’s real. I checked several media sources and even hit up The entire internet seemed ablaze with commentary, disgust and explanations.

Which left me thinking, what’s going on behind this distraction? I don’t speak up as often as I should. I watch. I listen. I read. I analyze. This administration is a dog and pony show.

Have you seen the 2013 movie Now You See Me? It’s about magicians and rather quite enjoyable. But what I’m going after is a particular line in which one of the characters (Thaddeus Bradley) explains:

When a magician waves his hand and says, “This is where the magic is happening.” The real trick is happening somewhere else. Misdirection.

Yes, wearing that particular jacket was inappropriate and sent a bad message. But more likely that not, it was intended to direct our attention there while other nefarious things happened elsewhere. Misdirection. It’s his calling card. She’s his wife.

When I was young we watched The Wizard of Oz pretty much every year. You know the part where the little old wizard with the friendly face nervously proclaims that we should pay no attention to the man behind the curtain? That’s exactly where we should be looking, always, behind the curtain.

So screw Melania and her jacket. Look behind the curtain. Find the real trick.
